NEW YORK - The number of city residents relying on food from charities and unable to feed their families is rising, according to a report issued by an advocacy group.

Nearly one in six city residents lived in households that could not afford to buy enough food during the three year period ending in 2005, according to the New York City Coalition Against Hunger report released Tuesday.

These households made up 15.4 percent of city residents — up from 14 percent between 2000 and 2003, according to the report, which was based in part on figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

According to the coalition's survey of the city's food pantries and soup kitchens, the number of people served by those charities rose an estimated 11 percent in 2006.

"I do think there's an increased demand, especially when I know that many of my staff in my own agency utilize food kitchens in between pay periods," the city's top welfare official, Human Resources Commissioner Verna

Yes ....
Why am I responsible for your laziness, stupidity and poor judgment????

If you want a life style like that, move to a socialist or communist country.

Yes. Local charities and churches have always used the money more efficiently than the government and is able to help people with individual needs, knowing who the scam artists are in a local community.

I believe if people knew the government wasn't going to take care of people, they would give more to charitable organizations locally and volunteer more.

The government on the other hand, spends most of the money maintaining their own bureaucracy and only a small amount is actually given to help the poor.

On the day this happens, we go into total & complete ANARCHY. People will panic & riots will cause mass destruction to our Cities & our people. It will make 9/11 look like a nice day in the history of our country. The welfare system & the prison system are the backbone of this country at this moment in time. I live in California & unfortunately, I have seen the future & it ain't a pretty sight! When that day comes, we'll all need the ability to adapt or die, & kill or be killed.

The underlying problem you're referring to is that the cost of living is higher than earnings. The short term solution is to raise wages, but that doesn't help individual markets like New York. The problem there is that there are too many people clustered around one center with limited resources. The higher the demand for limited space, the higher the cost for all goods and services.

That's one reason why I don't live in New York....that and they are crazy enough to elect Hillary to represent and tax them.

There is no easy answer to this .Around the globe we are living in a major depression for a variety of reasons.Do you propose for children to starve? Many people living in Australia are relying on handouts. No to cutting out welfare assistance only to those who really need it the most.

Completely cutting off assistance of any kind would be a disaster. However, consider this approach......

In order to collect government benefits, you must perform government service. Any job needing to be done from picking up garbage along the highway, to working at the DMV, whatever, would qualify.

This person would work a 40 hour week consisting of 4 days having 10 hour shifts Monday - Thursday. Pay would be consistent with minimum wage with subsidies being offered if demonstrated need occured.

Friday could either be used to rest or as a day to look for a better, higher paying job.

In addition to this, people in the program would be required to take certain "life management" classes in the evenings. Courses would be like "How to set up and maintain a household budget", "How to cook", "How to maintain your residence", etc.

People would not WANT to be on this program for two reasons:

1) It requires a lot more work than demonstrating financial need only.

2) If you can complete these classes, etc. their desire should be to want to make it on their own.

I fully believe in helping people who need it, but not just giving them handouts.

A little Mad?
When was the last time a cop actually helped you? Police issue tickets to make the government
money, not to help you. Police are meter maids doing nothing productive, but make your life
harder to live. They call tow trucks take your car and if you can't get it out, they re-sell it at
auctions to car dealerships, who sell it right back to you. You accept the rules of the game of life
because you feel powerless to change them. The government controls you into working your life,
having children and putting them in the same situation you are in now, and then you die.
Your parents did it to you, you do it to your children.
Did you really need that cop to write a ticket and fine you for not keeping up with the laws?
When you did something wrong as a child, did your parents tell you, you owe them $100?
Or did did you learn your lesson another way?

Think the laws are easy to keep up with? Ask your family or friends how many new laws popped
up in the last 50 years, everyone thinks it was so nice in the past, it was, we made
laws to stop it. Every spot of the earth is marked off with law signs. You know whats right and
wrong, you don't need to pay money to the GOVT when they tell you your wrong.

Why do they take money? The one thing you need in this world to live?
Because it's the one thing in this world you need to live, your CONTROLLED.

Are you MAD? Did it start with MONEY problems? Money is the root of evil things in this world.
Your fooled into thinking if you play the game and get enough money, one day you will
be left alone. Wrong, they watch you even more, cause now you have more money and
the GOVT wants more of it.

Do you drink or do drugs to take the pain away? It's not your fault. You want to take your anger
out on something/anything(the govt perhaps). PLEASE, stop re-directing the anger of the world
towards those you care about, put it in it's place, get mad at the GOVT, not your family.

You work for money, 30% to GOVT. You need food, %, You need a car, %,
You need registration, %, You need inspection, % , You need insurance, %, You drive to fast, %,
You drive too anything, %, You need to park, %, You get towed, %, Bought your land, %, You
actually have some left over, put it in a bank, % to GOVT. Want to leave the money you actually
saved to give to your family so they don't have it as bad as you did when you die, 50%.
You finally DIE, %. to be buried. Even when your dead, you owe money. Stop the CYCLE.

Nothing will change? Don't you think your great, great, grampa thought the same thing when
he left Europe to come to a place where the GOVT didn't tell him everyday, he's a bad person.
No laws? No way, just stop telling us where bad people while your making money for the GOVT.
Good people, we know what the laws are, WERE GOOD PEOPLE.
Bad people don't need the laws because they don't care about laws anyways! Don't have enough
money to pay for it? Good or bad, your going to jail to think about it now.

STOP THE CYCLE OF HATE AND DEATH, don't do it to your children again!!
If you need help, call 911, until then, LEAVE US ALONE TO LIVE!!
Who is anyone to tell you anything about your life, IT'S YOUR LIFE!

Remember, this is why we REVOLTED in the first place. Not that we didn't like
the world, but because we LOVE the world. I LOVE AMERICA in it's idea, the government
needs to make money somewhere else and stop stressing us all out or we will stop the GOVT!!

LET FREEDOM RING! --------we need to hit the bell-------DDDOOOONNNNGGGGGG!!!!!

No.

Food stamps, by the way, are as much a program to support higher prices for American agriculture as it is a food program for the hungry.
