for instance, if you create an account on a website, where you only have to provide a username and password, but then you only use it for a little while then quit, should you delete the account or does it matter? What if you may use it for future reference? (which is vaguely likely for me...)

It's not likely you can delete an account. Most websites don't offer the ability to delete an account. However, I'm sure if the account holds sensitive information such as your social security number or credit card number you can probably contact them directly and request the account be deleted. In most cases, it doesn't matter if the account remains open even if you don't use it.

A lot of websites I make accounts for - I never go back to. But from a web designer perspective it's nice if people delete their old accounts 'cuz it takes up space in some database somewhere.

In most cases you can't even delete accounts. All you can do is stop using them, and most sites will de-activate them after a while.

If you want to use in the future, just keep them. It wastes time if delete them then sign-up again.

Some have time limits, or usage limits, so if you don't use it, you lose it. I've tried to keep all of mine (and there are a lot of them!)
