How does one acclimate to sudden changes in temperatures ?

I think you are talking about fish, so if you are...I'd suggest a heater, to keep the tank at a constant temperature, if you don't have a heater yet, take the tank away from any windows, registers, etc, anything that will give drafts, i'd suggest somewhere in the middle of your house.
