Part 1: We have bt broadband with a home hub and have been using a desktop. Today my partner got a laptop and it asked for the code on the back of the hub to enable wireless internet access. We did this and it worked - we can use internet explorer on the laptop. BUT I was expecting all the BT 'things' that are on the desktop to appear on the laptop ie.BTyahoo!Broadband, BTBroadbandTalk Setup, HubManager, BTYahoo!OnlineProtection, BTCommunicator,BTBroadbandDesktopHelp. These are all programs in the start menu on the desktop when we subscribed for the hub (& were automatically given as icons) but there is no sign of them on the laptop. Does anyone know why this is?
Part 2: We both set up BTYahoo! email using .btinternet.com addresses. Now my partner would rather use outlook express on his laptop but we don't know how to set it up. It is asking for a POP3 and a SMTP (?) Can the same email address be used for outlook or will outlook 'provide' the last part of the address? Thanx in advance

1)
these icons appeared because you (or possibly a bt engineer) will have installed a cd rom which setup all those bits of software on the desktop machine when you got your bt home hub.

if not that, then you may have been told in an email to install these things - but they don't appear by themselves, they need to be installed.

you or someone else who is computer savvy will need to repeat those steps on the laptop to be able to use all the same features of the hub on that laptop.

try looking in the box the home hub came in for the installation cd.

2)
yes you can use your btinternet.com email address(es) while using outlook express - see this page for setting them up:
http://www.btopenworld.com/faqs/manual_email_setup

3)
to explain further, those icons are simply for using ALL of the features of the bt home hub using bt's own software - you'll likely find that as long as the laptop's connection to the hub is working it will be able to access the internet already without these icons, the icons just let you use all the 'bells and whistles' of the hub.

I assume that both the desktop and the laptop run under Windows XP, either Home or Professional. If the two machines are completely different, eg one a PC and the other a Mac you're in big trouble!

I can't help much regarding Q1 as I don't have a home network yet. However, I think that you have to configure the laptop to get it to recognise the network. Try Google or post your query at the source given below which I find very helpful.

With regard to Q2, you have to find out the pop3 and smtp settings to enter when you set up outlook express. I'm not on BTYahoo but, for example, my pop setting is pop.virgin.net and the smtp setting is smtp.virgin.net I assume that you and your partner have different email addresses eg me@btinternet.com and partner@btinternet.com. When your partner sets up Outlook express it will prompt him to insert his full email address - Outlook Express does not automatically provide the last part of the address.

Hope this is of some help. Email me direct if you wish

Part 1: You probably downloaded some software while setting up your account using the desktop, and it loaded all it's crap on there. None of it is necessary to actually use the internet. Anyone who knows the encryption key can enter it into their windows machine so they can access the internet via the wireless router.

Part 2: Go to the ISP, the broadbrand provider, and look up the email settings to enter into Outlook or any other email client. Usually it's just telling it what email server to go to, the email address and password.

for part one, didn't you have to install software on your desktop before using broadband? Usually, you do, and that's what installs all the icons and shortcuts.

for part two, you have to go to your customer service to find out those addresses, its usually something like pop3.yahoo.com or pop3.sbcyahoo.com. Something along those lines.

If you contact your customer care, they'll give the correct answers to both questions.
