It is believed that the first recorded use of Potassium Alum was in ancient China and Egypt for the odor reducing effects.
Alum powder, found amongst spices at most grocery stores, is used in pickling recipes as a preservative, to maintain crispness, and as an ingredient in some play dough recipes. It is also commonly cited as a home remedy or pain relief for canker sores.
Some women believe alum will tighten up certain muscles that are loose from over use.

Alum can help dry up cold sores and pimples, and it can help stop bleeding from razor nicks and paper cuts. Maybe she is prone to fever blisters when she's sick or stressed and wants to be able to stop them before they start, or maybe she nicked herself shaving and didn't want to wear an ugly bandage.

the mineral alum drys up the moisture.....if you put some on your lips, you would automatically pucker with the shrinking effect...you can guess what a woman would use it for....
