First determine if the speakers work. If they have a standard jack (and they should), plug them into a portable CD player, MP3 player, etc. If the speakers work we go to the next step. Are they attached to the correct jack on the computer? These days most of them are color-coded green. If there is no color code you can try each jack as you will not cause any damage by using the wrong jack. Assuming that is correct do you have the correct sound driver loaded? Do you see the little speaker in the lower right hand corner? Is mute on? Once you pass all of the questions and it still does not work - go to a tech as the next steps are probably beyond you (off-loading the sound drive and reinstalling it, dropping in a new sound card if necessary).

Obviously double check all your wires and make sure they are plugged in correct and in the right spot. Check the master volume on the computer is turned up-Start,Programs,Accessories,Entertainment,Volume Control. Lastly check your device manager(start, right-click mycomputer, properties, hardware and device manager. If there is a yellow question or exclamation mark next to your audio setup uninstall and reinstall or try the troubleshooter.

- check the back of your computer - make sure plug is pushed all the way in
- make sure your volume is turned up and if you have a button to push on - make sure it's pushed in (on the speaker)
- open one of the players (you usually use) and make sure the volume control is turned up (if it's a slide control - make sure it's slid over to mid way or higher)
- if all those are ok
- right click on the volume icon (near the clock on your monitor - at bottom right corner) and click - open volume control
this will open a window called Master Volume
in there - make sure the volume is not "muted" (make sure none of the volumes has a check mark in them) and make sure the volume slider is turned up (to whatever your preference is)

- if it still doesn't work - go into your device manager (right click on My Computer - Properties - Device Manager

How about checking the PC's volume control and the speakers' volume control. Sometimes the most obvious is least obvious.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
