It's a dirivative of a really old and common reply when the pirate crew was asked if the conquered captain should walk the plank. They all said in drunken unison "I agree". However it sounded more like "arg". Since no one dared to challenge that answer it became accordingly official. Plus, in their normal condition it was easier to say and remember. Even now, when asked a basic question, many would-be pirates respond with "arg" after a few rum & cokes. "ARG, i'll haav anuthr matey!"

I think if a REAL pirate ever heard someone say "arg"- they'd look at them & say, "What's THAT all about??!" :) I think that's an expression dreamed up by Hollywood screenwriters who have NO IDEA what pirates REALLY say... It just sounds cool- that's all.

Maybe is was a popular expression in that time and place. They did not have the same curse words we have today. Maybe arg was like saying "****" or "****" when they made a mistake or hurt themselves. I say arg when I am frustrated in an angry way. I think it is an old fashioned curse word.

No, they said things like "Harhar, me hearties, me beauties, shiver me timbers and splice the mainbrace". Total Hollywood codswallop, normally based on a West of England accent.

The "arrgh" is actually "aye" from English terms, but is with a bastardized extreme cokney accent, so it sounds like "arrgh" to everyone else.
