The flowers you buy aren't always fresh when they reach your hands. They only have a certain shelf life and in reality you can't change the spot they are in. Keeping the water clean (changing it every day) and keeping them in a cool area can help, but once they go downhill there really isn't anything you can do. You can also try triming off some of the ends to allow them to drink up more water. You always have the rumors about water additives... but none of those have every really proved to be true (when it comes to improving life of your flowers... some will actually shorten the life.)

Mostly glucose to feed the flowers and a anti bacterial agent to stop the stems going rotten and killing the flowers quicker.

They are mostly sugar and an acid to deter bacteria. University research on the subject showed that 7-Up or Sprite, mostly sugar and citric acid, works just as well as the commercial products. ( don't use diet types as they do not contain the needed sugar).
