how is that possible, why does it happen

Why does your thyroid hurt? I've have both ends of the spectrum - hyper & hypo, plus Grave's disease and a subtotal thyroidectormy. I don't recall it EVER hurting. Have you sought medical attention.

However, to answer: Perhaps it's the heat. I know if my cat curls up on my tummy when I have cramps, they get better.

Most likely it's the heat from its body. However you should probably get checked out by a doctor.
