One of the biggest signs is "bloody show" which indicates the thinning of the uterus and of course contractions are a good tell-tale sign as well. If you're having bloody show, then odds are you will go into labor soon as that typically means you're in the inactive stage.....walk walk walk walk walk and walk some more!

The doctor checks it.

Generally if you're having braxton hicks contractions, the baby has dropped, and your active, then the cervix naturally thins a little each day from the activies and the pressure of the baby.

Please, do not self-check. The best way to know is to see the doctor. If you are that far along, you should have regular doctor's appointments within 1-2 weeks of each other. If you feel you are in labor, go to the hospital!!!

You might not even know when it is. You may not feel any contractions at all. I went a week almost fully dilated before I went into labor.

Only your doctor or midwife can tell if your cervix has thinned... they have to do a pelvic exam.

Your doctor will determine this when he examines you. Thinning = effaced. So he'll tell you that you are something percent thinned or effaced.

I would just ask my doctor at my weekly appoitment. By now you probably are. I don't know if there's any "self-check."
