Can't they see she is a player, she's unstable, she's transient, she doesn't have successful relationships, and the only thing she really has going for her is her looks?
So...why are lesbians attracted to that? And it's not just on tv, but I see it in the REAL world all the time too.

I haven't watched "The L Word" since I think the 2nd season, so I may be outdated in my answer. When I was watching it, I noticed the same thing! Even I thought Shane was hot, and she's DEFINITELY not my type. Honestly, for me it was because she was just about the "butchest" character on the show and to me seemed like the most real. The rest of the women were kind of "Power Lesbians" or at least leaned more toward the "Femme" side.
I'm a femme and fall hard for butches. Shane was the only eye-candy for me on the show. She does ooze sensuality, she's very fluid in the way that she carries herself and is confidant around other people - which is something that is appealing to a lot of people. The fact that she rocked men's clothes and a messy (if a little long) hair-cut, did it for me. But if you were to put Shane in a line-up to include women of the more butch variety or perhaps an FTM or two - I'd definitely pick the later and not even think twice about Shane. It's all personal preference.

Here's the thing. There are never any butches on TV or in the movies. All the lesbians look like Ross's ex wife on Friends. I'm not that into The L-word myself, but it is refreshing to see someone who's kind of butch. (Though not nearly as butch as she thinks!)

I think that they are probably attracted to her because she is like some girls out there in all honesty. I guess there are those that are players and there are those who like to go with the players.
I for one don't mind her character but could never date anyone like her. Give me Dana any day. She is more my type - struggling away.

Probably just because it's a chase, and they know they can't have her. It's no fun when you know you can get someone, but the fact that Shane doesn't stick with one person makes her a chase.

It's looks and charisma. People followed Hitler's great plan, even though he had extermination camps. People will fall for a charismatic, attractive person even if they're heartless and evil.
