I think one of the promises of globalization was the idea of sharing cultures, ideas, and capital, but is it increasingly only one way? Is the world becoming just another American market for hollywood, Coke, Disney, and McDonalds? Will everyone speak english in 50 or 100 years? Will anyone still speak arabic, french, or german? If I go on vacation will I ever be able to see anything unique or speak to unique people with a unique culture?

Globalization has become synonymous with standarization.

While one can be tempted to say that it's USA-zation, the ones who actually done standarization are the ones who kept promoting globalization. One moment they could do it USA style, the next moment they do it China style.

Sorry to say but it is true. a lot of countries are becoming Americanized. They watch the shows on television. The companies advertise their products in a way that if you do not have it then your inferior. These people are quick to change their identities so that they can become more like the American people. The stigma is there, that to become like Americans is to become superior. People only want to be labeled or seen with the best people, product, shoes, hairstyle etc. Example when you try to go into a club if your not dressed a certain way or look a certain way you don't get in. So it is basically a club, a social and economical club that the rest of the world wants to desperately join; even if it when giving up what is most unique about themselves.

It is clear that American culture is becoming more widespread, but that is not what globalization is all about. It is easy to see that trade creates value (unless you are a Marxist -- Karl got that one wrong), so the more it happens the better off people will be. Globalization refers to the increasing tendency of trade to be international. Which, of course, benefits everybody -- if it didn't, people wouldn't do it.

It would depend on who you ask, those being globalized or those doing it.
