I'm a little surprised because of the media blitz eternally surrounding New York and Boston sports franchises and players, I assumed everybody had jumped on the Jeter bandwagon. But Morneau had a ridiculous year, and he absolutely deserves it.
I think Jeter was deserving because he helped the Yanks get into the playoffs despite some pretty big obstacles (Sheff, Matsui injuries, A-Rod becoming a mental midget, zero pitching, and Steinbrenner's ongoing idiocy). Dye had a great year too but seemed to stay under the radar a little bit on a non-playoff team with a vote stealer (Thome). As far as Big Papi, it seemed like everybody jumped off his bandwagon when he started publicly announcing how much he deserved to win the MVP, plus he's still fighting the whole "a DH shouldnt win the MVP" thing.
To the person that said Santana deserved it more than Morneau... In order for a pitcher (who plays roughly every 5 or 6 days) to win the MVP over a guy who played as well as Morneau, he's got to be by far the most dominant pitcher in the game. Minnesota's lineup would have fallen apart without Morneau, their staff could have survived sans Santana (Cy Young winner yes, but not MVP)

I was surprised because the media loves Jeter, but I definitely believed Morneau was the most deserving. In June, the Twins were a team several games below .500, people were ready to write them off. Then two things happened: Morneau got hot and Francisco Liriano got moved into the rotation. Liriano was incredible for what he did, but he like Santana only took the field every 5th day.
Morneau from that point on, led the Majors in hitting batting .362 for the rest of the season and had 142 hits, and he led the AL in RBIs. Because of his success the Twins were able to come back and knock off the Tigers from the AL central division on the last day. The AL central obviously being the hardest division in baseball last year with the Tigers, Twins and White Sox.
Some people argue that Joe Mauer was more deserving on his team as he did win the batting title, but Mauer had only 84 RBIs. Mauer was all singles.
Jeter had a good year, and he kept his team together despite injuries to Sheffield and Matsui, but he still had Damon, A-Rod, Giambi, Canoe, Abreu in the second half. Everyone in that yankees lineup knocked in a ton of runs.

Absolutely not surprised one bit. Justin Morneau is a deserving MVP.
In my opinion, I don't see how the MVP can be given to any member of the New York Yankees. In a lineup who's pitching staff alone costs more than several entire teams, I don't see how you can single one man out and say that he is "most valuable". The Yankees would have made the playoffs with or without Jeter. The Twins would most likely not have made the playoffs without Morneau. Therefore, Morneau is a more valuable player to his team.
People tend to forget what the MVP award is supposed to stand for. It's not a prize for the best fantasy baseball stats. It is awarded to the player who is more valuable to his team than any other player for their team. Jeter wouldn't even be in my top five, if judging the award for what it's really supposed to mean.

In response to the dude who talked about what MVP stands for:
If MVP is truly about the player most valuable to his team, without whom they wouldn't be successful, why has Mariano Rivera hardly been considered as an MVP.
Of the teams that dont make it to the playoffs, closing games is what does them in. I'm sure there's a number of teams that would be dominating if they had Mariano. If the Braves had him, they'd still be winning the World Series. If the Mets had him, they wouldve won in 2000.
As past history dictates, MVPs are no longer essential to their team's success. Now, it's based on stats relative to the rest of the league. Based on the "new" definition of the award, Jeter should be the MVP - hands down.

Jeter was Morneau's only compitition far as I was concerned. Morneau outhit Ortiz, Thome and the others and did it with little protection. He was the heart of the low scoring Twin's offense. Dye was one of 3 cantidates with almost identical numbers on the Whitesox (Konerko, Thome, Dye), Ortiz was part of the high scoring Sox offensense. Ortiz didn't hit for average. Most of the year he was hitting below .270 until a late season surge brought his average to something close to decent. Most of the RBIs by Ortiz, Thome and Dye were themself. They hit lots of HRs but most of them were with the bases empty. Morneau he had nearly as many RBIs as Ortiz but with nearly half as many HRs. Morneau was a much better RBI man than any of the other cantidates. If he'd played for the Sox either White or Red with that kind of production he'd had 170 RBIs this year.
So my only surprise is that quiet get the job done Morneau beat out the guys who have full time press agents working thier cause. A guy from a small market team opposed to guys from the big markets. I'm glad to see it. Too often the MVP = HR crown nodays. HRs don't win many ball games. The double when the team is down, the single with runners on base. That's what wins ball games.

Even though I am a Yankee fan. I would like to have seen Jermaine Dye win the award. But, Morneau did have a great year. So it's hard to argue with that choice.

He deserves it, but I am a little suprised, I thought Jeter would have one for sure. I think either guy could have won it though.
