Does anyone else realize that what we define as normal in our culture is actualy not normal. think about it, the portrait of the perfect family or the perfect mate. not many things can live up to the standards that we place in our own minds. therefore the preception of normal is a rarity and the ab-normal has become the normal.

What are you thoughts?

You are referring to common and rare, and not defining normal and abnormal.

Something to be common is anything that is usual and expected in our life or surrounding, that happens frequently.

'Normal', on the other hand, means almost the same, but with a slight difference. It is something the majority does, and what is noted as 'usual' too. However, this is a standard, an indefinite limit that can state what is abnormal or not.

What you have said about, say, the "perfect mate". Society displays it as common, simple and in a 'that's life' attitude.
However, this is not common at all, nothing can be perfect, nothing will be arranged like you want it to be.
If is our final choice to accept it as normal or abnormal.
If you trust the society's view, it might be normal - making you pessimistic in a way, due to to your expectations not being met.
If you take it as false, however, and take it as something abnormal, then your expectations are lowered, technically making you a more easily satisfiable person.

The choice is always your.

We need some kind of standard for everything. no matter where you live everything is going to be different, just like this guy said about the genital mutiliation in Africa. Normal is just a standard just like with numbers. Humans have some kind of obsession with order, like it or not. There's order in everything. That you just can't stop. Because nature does it, and humans are nature, you can't deny that. Just like men created numbers and letters to make things easier, and religion and politics to keep things in some kind of order. We create ideas of normal and rare in our own little world. The only thing we can do is be tolerant to what other people believe in. Because we do not know everything and much less understand it.

There is a whole school of thought dedicated to this: cultural relativism.

This school shoes how standards from one standard to another varies greatly.

For example, in N. Africa, Female Genital Mutilation is a standard for most tribal cultures. Here, we find it atrocious.

When you bring it to standards you set in your mind, that is a different topic. You will never live up to preconceived notions in your mind, it is not possible because you will never truly find yourself in someone else.

Normal has nothing to do with perfection.

Using a negative definition for the word normal. You could say
normality is the absence of neurosis or psychosis.

You hit the right thing. Average should be normal but it isn't normal is what we think is all about us. Like teens rebelling is normal now. It didn't used to be. We should look at things more at average. Ab-normal definetly is normal now. things that I think are ab-normal are all around me. And around my friends.
