I'm not sure if it's my video card, or some compatibility issue, but here's the deal:
I am unable to play certain downloadable games, because of choppy graphics and interrupted play, including screen freezing, black streaks, and vertical lines.
Specs: I have an AMD Sempron 2600+, 1.8gHz processor with 512 MB RAM. The Direct x version is 9.0, and my video card is an NVidia GeForce FX 5200.
Could the problem be that the DirectX and video card are incompatible? I didn't have problems when I initially got the system two years ago, and now it's acting all quirky! Thanks :)

Thanks to everyone for their helpful responses. I have updated the video card at the Nvidia site, but I am still having issues. I've also updated directx, and that seems to have made the problem worse.

Also, the main games that I play on the computer are Sims 2 and its related expansions, and the games worked before when I first got the system, as previously mentioned.

it could be one of two things:

* corrupt video drivers (go to www.nvidia.com) and download the latest drivers

* the games are very new and high spec and take a lot of processing power and the 5200 just can't keep up with it.

If you have a look at toms hardware
http://tomshardware.co.uk/2003/12/29/vga_charts_iii/index.html

you will see the 5200 is at the lower end of the scale. Games like Oblivion and Far Cry just wont play very well on your system.

I don't think it's a compatibility issue between direct x & your graphics card. How about programs running in the background ? Have you recently installed or updated anything ? When i upgraded Mcaffe a couple mounths back I had similar problems. Try using the task manager to turn off eveything you don't need before you start your game & seeif that helps. Be aware alot of programs turn themselves right back on, soif you run good for a minute & then not, check tasl manager again to see if they came back. Also check for overheating of your graphics card. Dust accumulation in the fans, heat sinks, & vents of your system. Good luck.

game computer separately is what gamers do, with some pop.
Hope you do what gamers do to get game power..

1. Go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest driver for your video card.

2. Install the video driver, reboot the computer.

3. Install the latest directX

You should be fine. If it doesn't work, the card may be going bad
