native to what land? india? then yes.
if you mean native americans, then "indian" was a misnomer. when columbus landed here, he hoped he had landed in india. "indians" would have made sense if he was correct.
the name just stuck. like many things in history and language.

Native Americans were inaccurately called "Indians" by Christopher Columbus, who thought he landed in India when he was actually in the Bahamas.
Native Americans are more strongly related to Mongol people than to East Indians (from India).
A lot of Native Americans take offense at being called Indians.
I don't mind, for myself, but some do.

NO! Only people from INDIA are indians. Columbus thought the US was India when he landed here, so the native people got called indians. They aren't at all, they are native americans or first nations.

You can be a Native and not be Indian. People are native of their home... state, town, country. Native Americans are Indians.

no, we're called collectively native americans, each tribe has their own name ( i am Cherokee). they were called indians because christopher columbus erroneously believed he'd sailed to india when he landed in america.......some people still refer to them as indians but it is a misnomer....... mitakuye oyasin (all my relations)
