A note to angelika--Princess Diana may have been a lovely person, but she was never a monarch--I suggest you look up the word.

It is not fair for me to pick here. I like Elizabeth I, because she was wise enough to tread the middle path in religion, and that caused less trouble. She also, with the help of very able ministers, built England into the mighty superpower of that day. But several people have picked her! I also like a few other monarchs not mentioned, so I think the best thing to do is to let you guys pick!

To just browsin--Henry II was very interesting, but he married one of the most amazing women of that time--Eleanor of Aquitaine. If you haven't already, see the movie based on them--The Lion in Winter. It's very good.

Elizabeth I, as she was a real, ruling monarch who accomplished much to set England back on an even keel after the chaos of the reigns of her brother and sister.

Queen Elizabeth I

She was born in adverse conditions. Her mother beheaded before Elizabeth was three years old. She was "tarnished" because of who her mother was.

Elizabeth maneuvered herself through her fathers reign, her younger brother Edward reign, followed by the rule of her older sister, Mary, better known as Bloody Mary.

She was especially placed under adverse conditions while living under the rule of Mary. Yet, she "danced" through all the political and religious boob traps and became the reigning monarch upon the death of Queen Mary.

Her reign proved a woman was very well versed to be a ruling monarch. England's treasury was rebuilt. She stood up to other monarchs from around the world. She knew better than to marry and used finely tuned strategy to remain single her entire life.

Elizabeth I is credited with having said when she decided to follow her soldiers to a battle:

"i may have the body of a woman, but I have the stomach of a king." how true that was.

She ruled wonderfully well, unlike anyone before or after her. She is in a class all of her own.

Henry II. I can't say he was kind and noble and all that, but he did enlargen the English lands, had relatively stable peace (for the time), and left a stronger monarchy than what he started. Too bad his naughty little sons blew it. I also find him and his time very fun learning (sleeping with his son's fiance, marrying a the ex-wife of a french king--she was fascinating in her own right, and what turmoiled parenting!).

Queen Elizabeth II of England of course. While her country was at war with the Nazis and her sister sailed her royal ship she sat by her people and live in a bombed castle through out the war. Even though all she did and her country did gave my people no nation, homeland and place of souvenirnty. But she was great although had no power. She was great.

Henry VIII. There was a man who knew what he wanted and who got it.

Actually, my favorite British monarchs were James Vi and VII and Charles I and II, but they were technically Scottish, not English.

Queen Elizabeth the first. She made massive strides in modernizing her country, was ruthless when necessary and passionately loved her country.

My favorite was Princes Diana. I think she brought a new flair to the british crown. It's too sad that she will never be able to see her two young son's rise up to the occassion. I think she would be exceptional proud of them.

All the ones who abdicated.

Now if only the rest will, and force them to get real jobs.
