i just opened an old no good harddrive to look at the insides and there was a little box on the front plate and i opened it and it was full of tiny beads. What are they for?

It's a "Pixie Dust Buster",,,,the drive's platters/ "Discs" have a metallic coating on them which occasionally gives off a few flakes

The beads attract that stuff and hold it,,to keep it from floating around in the drive and ruining it

What brand of drive,, a Maxtor?

I am guessing these are silica beads, to prevent moisture buildup
