1st, you don't wait 4 years.
2nd you make sure you know what the hell love is (hint, it ain't a feelin')
3 You stop lying to yourself and just say it like it is.

why in the first place r u there? pity?
talk to the person as you would yer friend or a friend. talk about the four years you have been with this person, but don't tell the person about how sad u have been or just not satisfied. tell the person something else rather than u did not love them. tell em u had a great time and that u were just confused four years ago and u panicked. something like that but not the way i write.
and this advice not to be taken seriously, just answerin for the points really, kidding. i am?

I think that you just have to sit down with them and say that you don't think that things are working out anymore. I think that after 4 years its a bit hard to tell the other person that you don't love them. But you should say that you think that you both want different things and due to this you are not happy in the relationship and you want to break things off

I take it you are not married to them. If not, you simply tell them you are confused and changing about your feelings. Try not to say the words "I don't love you."
If asked, say I'm confused about that. After 4 years, you
should be gentle. Suggest you give each other some time and space from each other while you think things out. However, if you have a child with this person or are married to them, my answer would be different.

You sound like me about 3 months ago. I was with a girl for 4 years and split with her. Just tell her the truth. Why are you not happy? Is it some thing which can be sorted with help/time? If not, just tell her, and the sooner the better

well i believe you should be honest wouldn't you want your partner to tell you and you need to look at what the relationship is giving you if you are not getting all your needs met and the both of you can't meet to those needs it might be the time to pack your bags or theirs , relationships are a 2 way thing not a one ,sometimes people do grow apart after a while i don't know how old you were when you got with your partner , but i do know some people grow apart when they matureor age . but it all comes down to you being honest to yourself and your partner.

Just be honest and tell them as gently as you can! At least you have the guts to admit you are not happy and can no longer live this lie anymore! Too many people stay with someone for years as they dont have the courage to be honest with themselves! Lifes too short to live with someone your not happy with. Good luck mate!!!!

Just say it they might be feeling the same. Life is way to short to stay with someone just for the sake of it at the risk to your own happiness. (Give the person the link to this question)

have been i this situation and my advice is do it like you're pulling a plaster. do it quick and be honest. It will hurt them but it's better than dragging it out. Also, stay strong, there will probably be tears and begging, if you don't want to be there then don't give false hope. Good luck.

gently.
after all you did have a long relationship with this person.
just do it in a way you would like to receive that kind of information.
one day someone might and i dont think you'd appreciate the hard way. i think you would just appreciate a bit of honesty and tact.
good luck.
