They dont want to come out and say it but Iraq is now entrenched in a civil war. The Iraqui army is composed of people from opposing sides so there is the problem with their ethnic loyalties thus making impartiality impossible. Its a tough call.

Obviously, Iraq has presented problems that the US didn't plan on. Conventional wisdom is: We leave and we look like we started the civil war and then left.

Like the mentality of fanatical islam, other countries will simply not understand why we did it. That will surely drop the US down another notch on the integrity scale.

Should we care? Who knows, maybe getting a serious punch in the nose would help us (politicians) see the light. On the other hand, it could be that some of our enemy's may take advantage of the weak signal.

Should we stay and help the Iraq military continue to build? If that became the focus of US military involvement, I would say yes!

No. US troops being in Iraq is inflaming the situation. It gives insurgents an excuse to continue attacks and be disruptive. Once the US leaves, Iraqis will settle down and take care of business.

Look how Vietnam turned out? We left that place and today they are a successful society. President Bush just recently visited in hopes of finding the remains of our MIA soldiers.

Iraq (Mesopotamia / Babylon) is the oldest civilization in the entire world. The first rule of law, Hammurabi's code was established there. They are not stupid people. They have a proud history and are the most literate people in the entire Middle East.

Iraq would do well without the USA meddling in affairs and war profiteering. Bring our troops home now! No timetables! NOT tomorrow, NOW!!!

That's an intelligent question . For which, no one can be sure .
Presently the Pentagon and the President are weighing the options including, but not limited to : Go Big, Go Long, Go Home.

Your statement would be identified as Go Long. The only people who know the answer are the forces in Iraq, our military commanders. BTW, have you considered joining the military and serving your country ? Just curious . I bet my bottom dollar, that you'd like it . I did it when the Iranians took our people hostage . That was the beginnings of Radical Islam.

Democracy is a wonderful thing, but it doesn't work when you try to shove it down someones throat. I don't think most people there want it , or even know what it is. If there idea of democracy has anything to do with what we've done to the people, I could understand why they wouldn't want it. You have to keep in mind that Iran, had there own real democracy until 1953, when Kermit Roosevelt went in there and pulled the first successful coup on a nation. The problem with the democracy they had is, that we didn't control it. People in that region still remember all that. And don't call liberal. These are facts.

I believe it is reasonable, yes. We have people trained in this, experts on outfitting and preparing an army to defend itself when needed. We also have experts in military logistics who will be able to give us a stream of accurate information as to when this army can be left to stand on it's own.

The trick is this. We must commit the needed manpower and resources to do this correctly, half measures will not do.

(for another answerer) If we back off now, leave, Iran will take the region immediately exacerbating the problem further and we will only have to return and do it all over again.

Definitely. Definitely it will allow the Iraq army time. But I seriously doubt what they will be able to do in the extra time.

they need some help.. but not from America.. our mere presence elevates the situation.. it is time to ask another country to take over the policing... Pakistan would probably love to do it, seeing as how they would be buddy buddy with a large oil producing nation after that.. and the US still gets to look good in the process (because it would be our idea!)

No, if we stay in there much longer there wold not be enough people left in in the country to form an army, they will eventually kill each other and all our boys too.

I think that this is the same military resoning behind Vietnam, and we didn't win anything from that "police action". All we did was lose a lot of young men, who would still be around today,
