First off it's not ok for anyone to be doing that.

If you're talking about Michael Richards, he was not making a joke. He was maliciously insulting an entire race and there was no punchline and nothing funny about it which is why he stormed off stage. This is how he truly feels and it came out in anger and rage. Don't make excuses for him unless you are a racist too. Everyone is disappointed by his behaviour and Michael Richards knows what he did was wrong. Sadly, he will never work in showbiz ever again.

You haven't seen many comics then. Sarah Silverman makes jokes about all ethnicites and she's white. I saw a special on Comedy Central where a woman, who happened to be white, made a lot of racial jokes, mostly aimed at Latino and black men and *gasp* people laughed. She even used racial derogatory terms including the N-word. Why didn't people get upset? Because it was funny and she wasn't trying to be mean.
Michael Richards was being mean. Sure, he had hecklers and he should have called them on that, but what he said was hateful and mean and not funny. He didn't even try to turn it into a joke. He could have even made a racial joke and made it work to his advantage but he didn't have the skill so he came off as a racist and what he said was racist.

that's actually one of those racism, there is truly no opposite direction to placed it. i have seen some very humorous white comedians poke exciting at black human beings and black lifestyle, yet in an non-inflammatory way. someone above me suggested it... "it really is what it really is". For whites to escape with it, it must be sharp, and witty. Blacks can nevertheless bypass for the low priced snort, for now.

Firstly, I think it's extremely stupid and I'm never amused when anybody tries to get cheap laughs out of stupid stereotypes. Secondly, don't even think about trying to defend Michael Richards, as he was not joking but spurting racist dribble, and should immediately apologise to the American public.

It's the old double standard thing. It pops up all over the place.
In a way it's like people can say bad things about their mother, but if you do they get all mad.

Have you watched Mind of Mencia? It's just not okay for other races, mainly whites because of their history, to go around yelling "******."
