San Francisco is the second most expensive city in the U.S. (after New York City). Unless you're very rich, you'll have little joy looking for a home in the Downtown area.

To buy: A two bedroom highrise apartment in Downtown San Francisco? Around 2 million dollars, give or take...

To rent: You're looking at around $5,000 + (Nob Hill), $ 3,000 + (Financial District), and you'd be extremely lucky to find anything under $ 2,000 that's safe/desirable in the city center.

The Tenderloin, Polk Street, and SOMA (below 6th Street) is still affordable, but you'll have to share the street with prostitutes, and drug dealers every night.

If that's not what you bargained for, I strongly suggest that you consider moving to the suburbs (Contra Costa County, the Peninsula) or outer neighborhoods (Sunset District, Richmond District, Parkside/Lake Merced, Mission District). Public transportation in the San Francisco Bay Area is excellent, and Downtown is often a hop on the subway away. You don't have to actually live there to enjoy it.

SFdude's right, angel's way off. The average 1 bdr. is about $1,800 to rent, meaning a 2 bdr. downtown would be over $3,000. To buy you're probably looking at $750,000 and up.

As was stated, you can get much better deals in the suburbs. There are parts of Oakland that are priced relatively well, but you have to make sure you're looking in safe areas (i.e. near chinatown, lake merritt or rockridge).

For a 2 bedroom, 1 bath - depending on the exact neighborhood you would probably be in the ballpark of $1200-$1500 a month. As for purchasing, you would probably be looking at the high $600K - again depending on the specific neighborhood.
