Just to provide some perspective - Those words were written by men who owned slaves during a time when women had no rights. So do you think that the authors of the Declaration believed we are all actually equal?

Aside from that; no. We are not all equal. Everyone has different wants and needs based on a myriad of circumstances. If all people were equal, then Socialism would work.

Human beings were not created exactly equal, but it was the intent of the Founding Fathers that all Americans should be treated as generally equal (meaning no one is "better" than another because he/she has more money or is more physically attractive or is a member of a royal family, etc.) Too bad it didn't really apply until well after the Civil War.

I believe that we should treat each other as equals; not judging others based on race, religion or gender, but there is such a thing as taking equality too far. If we're all forced to be truly equal then no one can be smarter than the dumbest among us, no one can work harder than the laziest among us, no one can be physically stronger than the weakest among us, no one can be more pretty/handsome than the ugliest among us -- get the idea?

Classic example of how that ideology did not work is the Soviet Union -- the working class people were all compensated exactly equally, so working harder or coming up with better ideas didn't translate into a bigger pay check. As a result, the workers did the absolute minimum in order to get by and never tried to improve any processes or products. The entire Soviet economy collapsed in the mid-'80's because there was no such thing as innovation or creative problem solving or development of new products or technologies that people wanted in the U.S.S.R.

Why do I bring this up? Simple -- there are people in this country who are pushing the issue of equality way too far. See, equal opportunity is guaranteed but equal outcome is not and should not be guaranteed. I have no problem channeling more tax dollars into the education systems of big cities -- it's only fair that children receive a generally "equal" education -- but no one should be simply handed a job or a certain salary. You wanna make the big bucks? Then EARN them.

We are "created equal".... and after that you have the right to merit what you will.

Just because God created us all equal does not mean we all have a right to live in a mansion and drive BMWs. Material things in life are earned. Few of us inherit it and fewer still have the proverbial "rich uncle."

The preamble to the Constitution says we have a right to " . . . life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Thomas Jefferson changed the quote from John Locke who said, ". . . life, liberty, and the pursuit of property." Well, some people believe that material wealth brings happiness. If that were true, rich people wouldn't commit suicide, or take drugs for depression, now would they?

Some things in life cannot be controlled. "S..." does happen.

We are created equal in the eyes of God and according to the Declaration of Independence, in the eyes of civil law. That does not mean we will always be treated the same way or have the same things. This is obvious just by observing the world.

Sometimes, you work hard an get it. Sometimes you work hard and get nothing. Life happens. Suck it up.

Best Wishes,

Sue

Don't know if you mean: Are all men equal or men and woman equal?

At any rate I believe it was written to serve as doctrine that all men are created equally under the law. Since it didn't allow for cultural evolution, you could safely assume that it applies to all citizens of the Untied States these days.

To say it's perfect... Not by a long shot! Think it works...Not for everyone! Should we strive to make it work... Absolutely, everyday we are alive and have a choice!

God didn't write that all men were equal, but that each person was responsible for the proper use of the measure of the gifts granted them. Under the law of the land, however, there should be no inequality.

They meant we are created equal like in the sense of the pigs in Animal Farm. Some are more equal than others.

In the eyes of god we are equal. In the eyes of one another, everyone always thinks that someone else has it better, and therefore they deserve more.

If the grass is always greener on the other side, why, when I stand in my neighbor's yard, does my yard still look like $h!t.

Nope, there will always be things that divide people....be it race, wealth, etc....and and we all know that if you don't have a lot of money, the things you can do are not the same as those people who have lots of money.....

I suppose the basics are what them ment though...meaning....the bill of rights and such....free speech, right to bear arms, etc.....we have have the right to Life, Liberty, and the Persuit of happiness......that does not mean we will all reach that.....but that we have to rights to persue it.....
