Why is it there is Bet, Black Miss America, Black history month... and now WET, White Miss America, White history month?? Do you think that these are necessary especially in a society that is trying so hard to be "politically correct"? Or maybe we aren't trying to do that at all.... ♥

I agree segregate a society and it remains fractured and separated. This only further separates us rather than unites us. America is supposed to a melting pot in which are differences are celebrated rather than criticized. As long as people continue to look at our differences rather than our similarities, how are we to be united.

I totally agree with Iceman. Until society begins to truly embrace ALL history then there is still the need for African American History Month and BET and Affirmative Action. Things have to change and until that occurs these institutions are needed. Your question is nothing more than example of "White Entitlement" that continues to plague this nation. Yes I said "White Entitlement". Look at all the major networks, we have ONE NIGHT on UPN THAT'S IT (sorry for the all caps). And you get upset b/c there's a BET, well guess what there are about 4 different versions of Telemundo too but hey it is what it is.

So if you're looking for WET I suggest tuning into NBC,CBS,FOX, and ABC at any given moment.

Peace and Blessing
The Revolution will be televised

The examples that you use were not established to be PC, they were established as away of celebrating a culture. There's a big difference. An example of PC would be that Kramer dude and that bull apology he gave the other night. That's being PC!!!!

Well the reason the Black Miss America and BET and Black history month exists is because they were denounced as people for so long and I guess everyone agrees with this to a certain point and make special circumstances. As for the white versions they are the people who DON'T think that Blacks deserve anything special and in an attempt to exclude them from certain things whites have designated specific things just for them. Is either side right? I think the original purpose for the black versions had a great reason. Let's face it, for years there were not black contestants in the Miss America pagent and even today there are very few by comparison. As for the t.v. shows there were few blacks on the prodominatley white shows for a long time. Now that we as a nation are more sensitive to these things they seem to have surpassed there time and place.

Sight unseen, I would have bet big money that this question was about race, simply because of the subject line.

The short answer to your "non-offensive" questions: 1. Because EVERY OTHER CHANNEL is "WET." 2. Because African-American participants in the Miss America pageant are rare exceptions, not the rule. 3. Because we study "white" history, in depth, EVERY OTHER MONTH.

You might want to do a little bit of research on the origins of those three institutions, and how African-Americans were pretty much forced to establish these things in the days before MTV played rap videos, or before Vannessa Williams could get crowned Miss America, or the days when "black history" was usually summarized in a paragraph or two in history books.

I don't understand why white people are so bent out of shape when a small minority (black people are only 12 percent of this country) wants to have something uniquely their own. Has nothing at all to do with political correctness. If black people want to have an avenue to showcase their unique talents, and the traditional channels just aren't doing it, then why not have something uniquely African-American?

because in the past black people were excluded from everything. Every month was White History Month all pagents were white miss america and every station was WET. Why would we need stations specifically designed for white people when most stationas were and still are geared towards white people. Even asking this question or not knowing the reason why it was necessary to establish separate things for black people is indicative of the level or ignorance of our society. Sayin such things are not PC is like sayin we should just sweep our problems with race relations under a rug as if they no longer exist when daily we are shown evidence that it is an ongoing underlying problem, not just with blacks and whites but all ethnicities. It shows many people just lack the understanding of this problem or they just are unable to see beyond their own sphere of influence

I have pondered this many times. And, in all honesty, I know that if White Miss America of WET were to ever (although highly unlikely) to come about, it would be amid a rash of protest and distain from minority groups screaming prejudice. I don't understand it, and I don't think I ever will. Knowing that that would probably be the outcome, how come there has never been an outcry from white america as to why BET and Miss Black America isn't prejudiced and biased?

I dont know. I think its dumb. But im sure the African Americans feel that the regular pagents arent fair and do not have equal numbers and or odds. And for the TV show, they seem to have a different culture. They talk differently, like to discuss different things and have a different attitude so its cool that they want a tv show just for them. Same as the spanish channel, SPIKE tv just for men, LOGO just for homosexuals etc. They get things from those channels that they want to hear/see/watch that arent on regular viewing channels.

Because white are the majority and it would be silly to have a WET!!

Imagine you moving to Nigeria and setting up a white miss nigeria....it would be ok (kinda) because you would be the minority. Now how silly would it be if they, in response, set up a Black miss nigeria??

Think about it.

Why are so many white people on this website always asking this damn question? In the past blacks were excluded from everything and we're trying to have our own culture. Why does it matter to you? Why do you care? White people in the USA have a headstart compared to the Blacks.

you have gots to be kidding! The simple fact that you are asking means that you are oblivious to your surroundings. You are not keen to diversty, and adversity. The world is NOT lily white, and yes folks just think that slavery was just 400 years gone by... Learn what happened, live it, and know not to ask this silly question again...
