If you are just starting out I recommend you get an internship or entry level job at a PR agency. That way you can get to know the business. As you start to climb the latter there are a few ways you can go career-wise:

1. Climb agency latter -- must be good at both public relations and bringing in new business, which is what you get responsible for as you get more senior

2. Go in house -- you generally get paid more if you work for a company doing PR for them but its usually not as exciting or dynamic as working at a PR agency where you usually work on several accounts

3. Freelance -- many people freelance their PR services by the hour. This is unreliable work at time but clearly very flexible which appeals to many people.

If you are very interested in a career in public relations I would recommend you get a subscription to PR Week.

Good luck

look for jobs in marketing and in public relations companies, you might be able to get in doing something like data entry / customer service and work your way up.
Or you can get a college degree in PR/ Marketing and walk into a job in that field.
