I was bored one day and counted the ads/pages in a few magazines. It's roughly 45%-60% advertising.

Because people are stupid. They won't boycott their favourite magazines and force an improvement in content/advert ratio. So you're getting the game of highest price for least content/quality that they can get away with.

Hi. It's down to two things mainly. One is the cost of printing, which is rising around the world. The second is the cost of avertising is falling - due to the fact that advertisers have numerous places to choose thee days and magazines will discount their rates to, in some cases, nothing at all. Don't assume that a heavily advertised magazine is making lots of money - it's not always true. I hope this helps.

I think the reason that the prices for printed mags are more and more costly (kinda like the increase in postal rates)...comes down to the Internet.

How easy is it to look up articles, ideas, stories on the web?? ---And all for free. In a way, the large volume of advertisements in the mags helps to defray the overall cost to the consumer (they are helping to pay the mag to publish)...but with the popularity of Internet, email and so on...who knows...maybe mags and letters will soon be a thing of the past.

So much for cultural advancement...if you don't have a computer (pretty soon) you will be cut out of the loop.
