It was a grandfather, his son and his grandson. However, the grandfather is the son of someone, so it could be 2 fathers and 3 sons, still 3 fish at one each.

grandfather, father, son, that makes for two fathers, and two sons, doesn't it. and that's 3 people so each catches one fish and that's 3 fishes.
the REAL question is, where did they find a spot where they were allowed to keep their catch? ;-)
