There is no 100% effective method. Gaydar may or may not be accurate. Eye contact is important, but it may just be that they are interested in our fashion sense, or lack thereof.
I've found that if I look at them in the eye, and drop my gaze to other body areas, then glance back after we pass, if they glance back, BINGO. I then stop, turn around and see if they do. :)
The best of luck to you!

Well, we don't wear armbands or patches on our clothing...anymore. (Thank you Mr. Hilter for that...JERK)
[if you need that to be explained, you can email me]
We don't look different than anyone else, we don't have a special handshake or secret society initiation, as some would have you believe. We don't actively "recruit" and we don't have special scars.
We're just as normal as anyone else.
The best way to get to know more of the GLBT community is to become active in the community itself. Volunteer for a local GLBT community center, civil rights group, health organization dedicated to the GLBT community. Many of these groups and organizations have "new member" get-togethers and "mixers" to get to know each other. Many have diner parties or movie nights or other social events.
You might concider going to a PFLAG meeting or GSA meeting in your school, if you're still in school.
Unless you "troll" the Gay Getto of your local major city, it's unlikely you'll notice a gay/lesbian/bi person on the street.

because it's impossible to tell preferance just by looking at a person. Have you ever seen sombody walking down the street and thinking "I just know that guy likes key lime pie"? I think not. Flamboyance is a result of some emotional instability, most of us are just regular guys and girls.

Because our sexuality doesn't define our entire existence? If you're interested in someone, just ask them out or something. It's a lot more effective than just staring at them. That usually leads to restraining orders eventually...

No. I am a starer, I like to watch people so EVERYONE thinks I'm hitting on them.
There is gaydar but that's pretty falty. I don't really think you can outside of the gay districts. When dealing with strangers its always hit or miss, you can't beleive the number of gay men I've found myself flirting with when their boyfriends come along....YIKES!!!!

Because most of them aren't flamboyant, gays and bis aren't like monsters where you can notice them. They look like everyone expect have different sexual orientation, does it really matter if you can't tell a gay person from a straight person.

I can never tell wether someone is a vegetarian or not just by looking at them. I think it's the same principle.
