How do you compress a YouTube video to fit into 100mb?

i know that a lot of the YouTube movies are way beyond 100mb so how are they able to upload their movies?

They may use a format like WMV which is smaller than mpg or avi (but also of a lower quality). Or they reduce the size of the picture from 720 pixels across to 320 pixel, or other smaller sizes.

Most are not, they are not regular movie files they get converted to something else (.FLV)
