gaurdian or gatekeeper. he will attempt to stop people from traveling when they do not know their intent.
this is a possibility. did you have an intent for the travel or were you just trying to do it to see if it could be done?
he is a protector and will not let you through untill he feels that you are able to both defend yourself and make it back to your body safely.
he,she, it, will appear to everyone in a different way. by your description he got you as soon as you left your body and would not allow you to go further?
have you projected before? if you have and have not had problems then i am clearly wrong in this matter and you may have a larger problem.

I think it would be very awesome to see a big black Anubis type figure.
I have alot of dreams about Egypt i plan on going there because of how involved my dreams are with the pyramids. etc.
I have had Guides in my dreams although mostly they are Dragons. Even within the pyramids.
Take notes of your dreams and meetings with this being.
It might lead you on your own journey.

no but I do have a statue of him in my house. I have seen an anubis like figure in dog form in my dreams.
