Anybody up for a yahoo answers philosophy group, to choose a classic philosophical text together, and then read a certain amount a week (given busy schedules, we can make them short), then ask questions on answers discussing the text we read?

I was thinking maybe a Kant, Kierkagaard, or Wittgenstein? If there are any takers, I'll post a "what should we read" question.

Don't start with Kant. It's like starting a gourmet meal with a bowl of black pepper and a spoon.

You might consider starting with Plato or Socrates. They are more readable, and a good introduction to later concepts addressed by other thinkers.

Sounds wonderful. To read any of Kant's Critiques would require way too much time on this board though! Short excerpts, maybe!

Sartre anyone?

Kierkegaard's Provocations might be a good choice -- accessible to beginners. Plus I think it's available as a free pdf download. But the overtly Christian aspect of it might turn some people off who might otherwise be interested. Bryan Magee (who's tone deaf when it comes to religion) dismissed him as a fundamentalist in The Story of Philosophy.

That would be fun. I would REALLY need help with Sartre, though, that guy didn't make a damned bit of sense. I really enjoyed Kierkagaard & Wittgenstein.

I would love to. Even though I can't stand to read Kant, maybe I coudl ead David Hume, his rival that week :)

PS Merleau-Ponty is way cooler than Sartre.
