I have an 11 year-old daughter. She recently signed up for gmail. When I looked at her account, she had hundreds of SPAM messages - meaning she had gone to some sites which recorded her email address. While she did not receive any really bad SPAM messages, it was a call for me to let her have access but in a protected manner. She got messages that contained things like "How to pimp out your cellphone" which I think are innapropriate for her.
How can I set up an email account for her that will protect her? How can I prohibit her from accessing certain sites? She share a computer w/ my wife so I don't want to 'restrict' my wife - LOL. I am willing and will talk to her (already have) about not visiting sites w/out my approval but she's growing up and I want to learn to use the internet w/out too much fear. I realize I can't protect her 100% but should I use a filter, etc?

If your computer is on a router, your router will have filtering setups. I would not have a email @gmail, use @yahoo, i get no spam. also if she uses IE as the browser it has some filters that work good but Firefox does not have any website filtering also if you want your wife not to be blocked most filters just ask for a simple password before the page opens up. If your 11 yr old is smart with computers she can at anytime take down the filter if she goes to google and googles the website because they have "Cached" button you can press and it may not load all the pictures but the words will still be there, other search websites use that feature too. I would you the Router Filtering system. One last thing, if you have a really hard to guess e-mail address, you shall get little or no spam, mine has a ton of numbers in it and i get no spam or junk email and im at yahoo

#1. Don't use free email services like gmail, hotmail, yahoo email etc. They all are haven's for spammers and advertisers and hackers and more.

#2. Your internet service provider should allow you to create more than one personal email account. Create one for your daughter that is unique and only allow her to use that email address on certain sites.

#3. Buy a good router if you have high speed internet. Most have configurable menus where you can filter certain web pages, websites and even key words like porn etc. Read the manual or investigate routers for more information.

#4. Possibly look at some sort of monitoring software that will monitor all the computer usage, like clicks, pages visited, everything done on that computer can be recorded with certain softwares. If you do all the rest, this step should not be necessary, plus it is sort of like "spying" and I don't really agree with it unless it is necessary in the Home place. Now at the workplace and School, that's a different story.

#5. Above all, be a good parent. Always check on your child's internet usage. Limit it, and know it. You yourself must be "computer literate" in order to know what your child is or is not doing and who she is or is not talking to or being stalked by.

Ok, there is one way you can find out who is spamming you, or rather who leaked your info. All you need is a gmail account. If you already have one, here is how you proceed.

Gmail offers the facility to use multiple email addresses. In the sense that suppose my email id is example@gmail.com, any email of the form example+xyz@gmail.com also reaches my inbox.

So, each time you register to a particular website, provide your email address as yourid+websitename@gmail.com.

Now, all these mails from all the sites get into your inbox. You need to classify the mails according to the source. To do this, go to settings inside your account. Here, click Filter. Set a unique label for all emails that are delivered to that one particular yourid+websitename@gmail.com email id.

Now, you only need to keep track of whether all the emails delivered under one label are from one particular website only. If there is another website sending you an email from a label that it is not supposed to send to, then you can very easily make out that it is this website that leaked your information to the spammer!!

Create a block list on yahoo. get rid of the gmail one and have her create one on Yahoo. You can creat a block list and if you sign up first it will let you creat an account for kids under 13 or 18 I don't remember. It has a filter that gets rid of inapropriate e-mails. Hope I could help
