It depends on what you like or what you want your surroundings to be.
Anything close to Lake Travis is great (Steiner Ranch, Riverplace, etc), but if you're single and still want to hang out on Sixth Street, anything close to UT would be ideal.
East Austin is vibrantly growing, too.
Good luck!

The simple answer is two-fold.
You're close enough to the culture and opportunities that you've come to Austin to enjoy in the first place. And ...
You can afford to live there.
Not all places are the same in terms of what you get for your money ... which is pretty much the way it is in all urban areas of North America. The closer you try to get to downtown (or out by the lakes), the higher the price tag will be. Supply and demand, right?
For most folks, choosing either NW Austin (for the older, established neighborhoods and access to Loop1 and SH-183 and points west) or NE Austin (Access to IH-35 and points east) prove to be the most common. The third group tends to locate in south Austin, where the neighborhoods are newer and the commute is generally to downtown.
If you ~really~ like the downtown scene, try either north or central Austin ... but be prepared to see a significant price tag. On the other hand, you'll probably be able to fully utilize city transit, which means you'd be saving a bundle on parking and gas ...
Personally, I moved to NW Austin from Canada. Then, as soon as I'd scoped out the surrounding area, further on out to Georgetown TX (about 20-25 miles north of Austin proper). Then again, I'm not really fond of the whole big-city thing...

Like the previous answer, it all depends on what you want.
I am married and have a family, so we live in northwest Austin, which are great older neighborhoods and excellent schools.
But, if you are single, you may want to live closer to downtown to get the younger and student scene.

I lived there between William Cannon & Ben White on w. Berkley ave. It is a nice area of town.
It is expensive to live there though.

If you are wealthy, then the west side or near UT. If you are poor, the south or east side. If you are in between, then the north and northwest side. The northwestern and northern burbs are the best in my opinion.
