If you make it a habbit to handle him more often, he won't bite you. If you only take him out when you clean the cage, he's probably very scared of you. It's a good idea to keep the cage clean (your mom is right), and your guinnea pig will be happier if he has both a clean cage and gets more attention.

The cage will have to be cleaned more than once a week not to smell. Try to pick him up using a towel. He will feel more secure wrapped up in something. Also, offer him some veges when he is out and it will seem more of a treat to be picked up. My boys still run when I try to pick them up because it is their instinct, but once I get them, they are fine. It takes guinea pigs some time to adjust and feel safe and trust you. Don't give up! Best of luck!

if you have not tamed your guinea pig to you yet, use garden glove on your hand to pick him up, clean cage twice a week if you need to, could put baking soda in bottom before adding bedding, to help keep the odor down. It won't hurt the animal
