daughter is worried he is gaining too much weight too fast. She is breastfeeding on demand and I think it's great he is thriving and there's nothing to worry about. Am I right?

Show her this growth chart for BREASTFED babies:
http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/growth/chart3.html

8.5 lbs at birth is on the mean +1.5 line
11 lbs at 6 weeks is closer to mean, which means if anything he could weigh a little more (at 6weeks the mean +1.5 is about 12 lbs)

My baby weighed 8 lbs at birth, and then 20 lbs at 4 months (which is off the chart). Now at 8 months he is only 26 lbs (I say only because 6lbs in 4 months isn't *that* much, whereas at 4 months I thought he would be over 33lbs at 8 or 9 months and no longer fit into any car seat on the market!), which even more off the charts BUT it is appropriate for his height. It is best to only compare weight to height.

You can NOT overfeed a breastfed baby. It isn't like formula where moms keep pushing the bottle until they eat that last bit, after all they ate x ounces yesterday, they should eat the same today. Breastfed babies may suckle if you give them the breast but they will not drink unless they are thirsty/hungry.

Your grandson is healthy, and your daughter just has a bit of "new mom syndrome" give her a hug and tell her everything will be fine and she is doing great.

You are 100% correct! My grandson weighed in at the exact same weight. He weighs more than the "average" baby. That doesn't mean that he is too overweight. I bet if she could see the percentile chart that pediatricians use, she was see that though he is on the high end, that doesn't mean that it's too much.
At nine months, we had to buy a bigger car seat for my grandson as not only is he big in weight, but longer than most babies his age and he feet was hanging off the edge of his seat!
Your daughter should keep on feeding on demand.

Oh, how great your grandson is so nice big and healthy. My baby was 10lbs at birth and is now 4mth at 20 lbs. He is a big eater and very healthy. Doctor says its quite normal and he has no obesity. Yes your right. Tell your daughter not to worry at all. As long as there are no problems with both her and the baby, just tell her to continue bonding with him. She will feel much happier.

If the pediatrician has no concerns than there isn't any. My youngest was 7 lbs at birth and weight 21 lbs at 4 month check-up. If the gain is gradual no worries. Congratulations!!!

Your grandbaby is doing great. If he was gaining too fast her dr would have said something. Breastfeeding is the best for the baby and she is not doing anything wrong. Continue to encourage her to feed on demand and enjoy her baby.

You are completely right, both of my children were very tiny at birth, one weighing in at 6 pds and the other at 5 pds 8 oz, both of them gained weight rapidly and I thought they were eating to much, but then my doctor informed me babied grow and continuous weight gain in the early stages of life is perfectly normal, when they are not gaining any weight is when my doctor told me I should be concerned.

Breastfed babies gain alot of weight fast and slow down at six months .They are all usually in the 90-95 percentile for the first six to eight months .
