It is called glycolysis. Also note that one 6-carbon glucose is broken down into two 3-carbon compounds. Each 3-carbon compound is called pyruvate.

This would be Glycolysis, 1 Glucose molecule (6 carbons) is converted into 2 pyruvate molecules (3 carbons) 10 steps, occuring in the cytoplasm of cells. 2 net ATP are gained for energy.
