Its not a sour grapes thing. I beleive that the sports writers are not objective and are downright bias towards New York teams when they vote for MVP or other awards.. If they were objective they would have clearly seen that there was no other player that was more valuable to his team than Derek was to the Yankees. With the injuries that the Yankees had in the early portion of the year, Jeter stepped up and almost carried the Yankees. That's valuable to me. Morneau had another reat hitter beside him in Mauer so the pressure wasn't there.
The Baseball writers suck.

Blueyeznj no one implied he carried the team "all" year. The first part of the year when all of the injuries occured to Shefflied and Matsui and Giambi, Derek did carry the team with his hot hitting. There were contributuions from others but he was hitting close to .400 with an OBP of .550 early on. I'd take that anyday.

I am shocked, dismayed, diappointed, and above all I have to say also that the baseball writers suck.
The amazing year that Jeter had, only to be robbed because he wears pinstripes. He won a Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, came in second for the batting title.. the list of this man's accolades goes on and on....not to mention... captain, rookie of the year (back when), World Series MVP(back when)
Jeter exemplifies everything that baseball is all about... leadership, teamwork, strategy, effort, and true love of the game.
He was robbed, there is no doubt about it. Just like Robbie Cano was robbed last year for Rookie of the year.
The Baseball Writers...... SUCK

I don't think either one of them should have won the MVP. The voters got it right in 2006 because Justin Morneau was more valuable to the Twins than Jeter to the Yankees. This year the voters got it wrong. I personally feel they chose Pedroia because his 5 games hitting 4th behind David Ortiz was blown way out of proportion by the folks at ESPN and SportsCenter. Francisco Rodriguez was clearly the most valuable player on the team with the most wins and should have been awarded the MVP. Put someone like Scott Shields out there as closer and chances are at least 15 to 20 of those 62 saves aren't wins for the Angels and the Angels miss the playoffs.

I had Morneau winning the MVP back in August. Not surprised at all.
Things to remember:
1.) Joe Mauer that other guy on the twins - had 84 RBIs.
2.) Santana played every 5 days.
3.) Liriano's move to the rotation may have started the Twins up, but Morneau carried them after he went down.
4.) From the time that Morneau got hot, no one had a higher average than him - .362 from June on, no one had more hits than him (142), and he led the AL in RBIs from that point.
5.) The Twins comeback to win the AL central (a noticeably harder division last year than the East after the Red Sox blew a fuse) was the longest time a team had ever held a division lead only to blow it.
6.) Jeter had the better lineup complimenting him even with the injuries to Matsui and Sheffield. C'mon, Cano batted 7th-9th all season long.

Okay, people get all emotional about Jeter, but let's not get crazy here. Some folks like to claim that Jeter basically carried his team while Morneau had real hitters around him. The facts don't support that position. Let's look at the other Yankee hitters.
- Damon - .285 - 24 hr - 80 rbi's - 115 runs scored
- Giambi - .253 - 37 hr - 113 rbi's - 92 runs
- Rodriquez - ..290 - 35 hr - 121 rbi's - 113 runs
- Posada - .277 - 23 hr - 93 rbi's - 65 runs
- Cano - .342 - 15 hr - 78 rbi - 62 runs (and he missed 40 games)
This doesn't include the significant accomplishments of Bernie Williams and Melky Cabrera or the tremendous stats Bobby Abreu posted in his 58 games with the team.
Jeter had a tremendous year, yes. But to imply that he carried the Yankees this year is ludicrous. The Yankees led all of major league baseball in runs scored by a substantial amount. One player is not the reason for this.
Additionally, did anyone think the Twins had a shot for the playoffs in June when Morneau began to get hot? Morneau's contributions were spectacular and he is deserving of this award. :-)

Jeter was lucky enough to win the gold glove, which he did not deserve seeing as Alex Gonzalez had a much better fielding percentage and has much great range. In fact, Jeter isn't even the best SS on the Yankees!! MVP?!? Jeter's #s weren't even close to Morneau's or Ortiz's, both of whom had far better RBI, HR, SLG, OPS, etc. than Jeter and, at least in Ortiz's case, far, far fewer ABs. No one on a $200 million dollar plus payroll should be ever considered for MVP. Seven, count 'em 7!!!, Yankee players received a top 10 vote for MVP this year. What a disgrace!

They did it to Rivera in 2005 with the Cy Young, and they did it to Jeter this year with MVP...... if there is ever a chance for a Yankee not to get an award..he wont. LOL.. Figures... Jeter Deserved it more... Its nice Morneau doing what he did in Minnesota.. show me that in NY or Boston... ild have taken Ortiz over Jeter, but Morneau..thats a slap in the face. the only other player in AL who deserved it maybe more than JEter was Ortiz and with how the Red Sox pulled the El Foldo, he was not winning, which isnt right, but that said, Morneau was not more deserving than Jeter, Not.... at ...ALL! I dunno if theres a NY bias..but NY players sure seem to get screwed alot, and not just the Yankees, but the Mets too, and going back to the Dodgers, and Giants also.. and for all the "Arod won it" crap.. the only competition AROD had that year was from a DH and the writers NEVER give a DH the MVP.. AROD won by default. Also, Jeter is a 2 hitter geniuses, ortiz and Morneau are 3 or 4 hitters.. jeter will NEVER have the numbers they have unless he hit 3rd in yankee lineup, and if you think if derek hit 3rd all year that he wouldnt have 125rbi come end of season, then yer REALLY a moron.
Craig S below...
If you had a CLUE, you would know that Fielding percentage is the most overated stat in ALL of the defense side of Baseball... Some guys get to and get a hand on ALOT of balls that average fielders wont get near, and because they get to them and cant get a good throw off, their fielding percentage drops, where as the person with ZERO range has a higher Percentage because they get to NOTHING! so they have fewer chances to make mistakes.
So in essence, Fielding Percentage Punishes the fielder with superior range and defense skill and awards the lead footed guy who covers NO ground.

I'm extremely disappointed at the results of the voting. Deter Jeter held the Yankees together all year while so many were on the DL. There is no more difficult job than to be the captain of the New York Yankees and to have the kind of year he had. People knew going in that his strong suit was not hitting home runs or driving in runs yet there was no one better in setting the table for the big guns. 97 RBI's is amazing for a number two hitter. The voting committee really screwed up big time. I my mind Jeter is still the MVP for 2006.

Simply put, Justin Morneau had a more productive season and exceeded expectations of him!! When will you Yankees fans realize you can't always get what you want!!! Jeter didn't do anything special....the sports writers made the right choice!!

If Derek Jeter finished higher than 4th in the AL MVP voting that is a travesty! Ortiz shouldn't even be in the top 10...

You're right. Morneau also had Mauer. Jeter only had Giambi, Cano, A-Rod, Damon, and Abreau. Where's the fairness.
I don't know what to say to that. First of all, you are probably die hard Yankee fan who thinks Chow Mein Wang (sorry don't know his exact name) deserved to win the Cy Young. Jeter was not robbed and Morneau did carry a team from fourth place in the division in June to division Champions.
To all Yankee fanss who are crying about Jeter not winning, I am sorry but I don't think I have enough tissues for all of you.
