No you will have to urinate in a cup so they can check for bacteria under the microscope. They should give you something to wipe yourself down there with. Then you pee a little in the toilet then in the cup again. You wipe yourself to avoid contamination and you urinate a little in the toilet so that they can get a true count to see how bad the infection is. That is all to it. It does not take long to check it out and you will be given an antibiotic prescription when you leave the office. Don’t wait to get the appointment as you will get much pain if you wait. If they won’t give you an appointment today then tell them you have a bladder tract infection and are in pain. They always see my mom almost right away and always on the same day. I hardly ever get them and they even see my on the same day. If you are a teen don’t worry about it coming from sex and your mom finding out. It does not. §

This cranberry juice information you are getting here will NOT get rid of an infection but prevent another from coming in some people. Trust me I was in the medical field for 20 years in the lab and assisting the doctor in a large doctor’s office.

For the record, a Pap smear checks for cervical cancer and precancerous conditions.

Normally, a urine specimen is all you need to confirm a urinary tract infection.

If you've had urinary tract infections before, and are familiar with your symptoms, you may consider calling ahead and seeing if you can bring in your own urine specimen; if they allow this, you typically won't even need to make an appointment, they'll just check the specimen in the lab and prescribe antibiotics if that's what it turns out to be.

If that's the case, the doctor won't even see you, and you'll forego the office visit charges, and end up just paying for the lab work. It's quite a bit more convenient.

Not usually, if it's been a while since your last PAP smear, then your doctor may elect to perform a pelvic exam. If you have been going yearly for an annual Gyn exam, then they will not do a PAP, but in any case, you will have a urine sample cultured for microorganisms to determine what critter is causing the UTI. You will be given a broad spectrum antibiotic, (usually a sulfanomide) and instructed to refrain from sexual activity until the infection is cleared up. If you are on oral birth control pills, you will need to use back up contraception for a month, as many antibiotics decrease the pills effectiveness. If you are having unprotected sex, especially with multiple partners, a good doctor would not only get a urine test, but perhaps a culture for gonorrhea and chlamydia as well as a blood test for syphillis and HIV. And then instruct you to use condoms every time you have sexual contact.

If you have a UTI, best home cures for that are to drink cranberry juice and lemonade. If that doesn't do the trick, see your doctor. They won't do a pap smear on you because your UTI can skew the results. In fact, they probably won't do any type of exam on you at all -- usually they just give you a high-powered antibiotic like amoxicillin or azythromycin and tell you to take it until there's no more to take.

NOTE: If you do end up going to the doctor and he/she does prescribe antibiotics, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE ALL THE PILLS ACCORDING TO THE DOSAGE SCHEDULE. If you stop taking them once you start feeling better, the UTI can come back ten times worse than before, and the antibiotics won't work on it anymore. It's a pain, but be sure to finish the medication.
