Also, does the mother to be have to open the presents or can they be opened by the hostess and displayed on a gift table?

I would send it a few weeks in advance. This way, people have time to book that day off. It will also give them plenty of time to shop for a gift.

I also think that the mother should open the gifts herself.

They should be sent four weeks in advance to give people plenty of time to shop and make plans. If you have out of town guest it might be good to have a hotel in mind that they might like to use.

In answer to the gifts, most people at showers what to see the mother's reaction to the gifts. If there are too many, maybe save her moms and the dads moms gifts to open last if they are bigger ones. But most people will enjoy waiting and watching her open them. Besides who doesn't want to ohh and ahh over all of those cute little socks and oneies?

I hope the mom to be loves everything she gets. Dont forget to get her some Thank you cards so she can get started. But don;t be hurt if you don;t get them until the baby is six months old.

Good luck.

The proper time is 6 weeks. The Parents-to-be should open the gifts. The shower should be given around 30 to 32 weeks into pregnancy.

As a general rule of thumb, Send out 3-4 wks in advance. That way, they have plenty of time to plan for that and if they feel obligated to buy a gift, they will have plenty of time to accout for that in their budgeting.

If you plan on having the gifts displayed, just make a note on the invitations that:

"gifts will just be displayed during the shower. please bring the gift unwrapped"

That will help avoid confusion of your guest when the host rips in to the carefully wrapped gift intended for you.

Good luck and congrats!!
