I would guess that it depends a little on your current driving experience. I got mine with 4 hours worth of lessons, but then I had been driving double decker buses for 12 years.
A lot of training schools offer a weeks worth of training and the test on Friday. You would probably share the instructor with another trainee but in my opinion this is a good thing because you also from their mistakes and it makes the lessons less intense.
I believe you now have to gain one licence before progressing onto another (ie, pass your rigid test before applying for articulated or draw-bar) I think they are still known as class 2 and 1 (?) And before you can get that far you have to pass the theory test.
I can't honestly say how good or bad the trade is these days as I never took it up full time; you would never have a good reason to be unemployed if you had the licence(s) though.
Good luck!!

I did mine in 4 days but this was18 years ago and had experience with PSV. Its in two parts now ridged first then the bendy stuff,I think there may be a theory test as well. I'm sure there are Intensive courses but at the end of the day its up to the individual. As to wether its a good trade,I'm glad I did it but beware you cant plan a social life your at the mercy of so many things. The money has improved over the last 2or3 years.
