I have to keep putting water in my car about every week, but it was looked at and there are no leaks. The heater blows cold air and the temp rises until I put more water. Now my check engine light has come on. Any ideas on the cause? I'm a single mom and I can't afford to take it to a mechanic right now.

I'm sorry the guy that looked and didn't find a leak is an idiot. If your loosing water from the cooling system, then their is a leak. He just doesn't know how to find it. If the leak is not obvious then you may have a cracked block and the cooling water is being ejected out of the exhaust system. Check your exhaust pipe for water coming out while the engine is running and warmed up. The only other possibility is that it only leaks when your RPM is up..ie while driving. Have someone More competent check your car out.

I think you have to have a leak, it could be on your water pump, there has to be a leak b/c if you are using that much water it is running out and when you put in more it fills it up until it leaks it out again, it could also be a leak on your intake manifold of head. there are alot of possibilities. unfortunately i think you need to take it to someone. i would not take it back to the same mechanic you did before if they said that nothing was wrong. if you lived near me i would take a look at it and probably find the problem but i can't make a certain diagnosis without looking the car over.

That car if it has a V6 engine has a known problem of the intake manifold gasket leaking. The engine sucks coolant into the intake and burns it.
Check oil to make sure coolant is not getting into the oil.
Don't drive the car. It possible to repair the problem before serious damage results.

Hey there you keep having to top up your coolant because your adding water to it and water evapourates buy some anti-freeze coolant and just add that to it and the reason your overheating is because your thermostat is not opening or your electric fan is not engauging but i would stop putting water in your car and add anti-freeze coolant to it and get your thermostat changed this is cheaper then if your fry your motor and have either buy another used motor or even look for a new car ..But this is what you should get done get your coolant system flushed out and your thermostat changed and fresh anti-freeze coolant added to it and that should fix your problems hope this info has helped you out...now your check engine light your probally due for a oil change and a tune up like spark plugs and wires and distribitor cap and rotor or you may have to take it in for a dyanostic's scope reading to determin any problems like a bad sensor i hope this info was help-full for you

well it might be the intake manifold leaking coolant into the motor the only way to tell is to fill the cooling system up pull all the spark plugs and put pursuer the the system and look to see where the water is coming from

Your thermostat may not be opening and closing. Also your coolant may need flushed. You need to keep 50/50 in your car. Or a mixture of water and antizfreeze. Hopefully I have helpt some.
