if u mean y + 4x = 1, then
y+4x = 1
y=-5x-8
plug the second equation into the first equation using y
-5x - 8 + 4x = 1
-x = 9
x = - 9
plug x back into the first equation to solve for y
y + 4(-9) = 1
y = 37
ANSWER
x = -9
y = 37
-------------------------
but if you meant
y = 4x + 1, then
y = 4x+1
y = -5x - 8
set the two equations equal to each other
4x + 1 = -5x - 8
9x = -9
x = -1
plug x back into the first equation
y = 4(-1) + 1
y = -3
ANSWER
x = -1
y = -3

y+4x+1,y=-5x-8
if y=-5x-8, substitute to the the first equation
(-5x-8) + 4x +1 = 0
-5x-8+4x+1=0
-1x-7=0 (transfer to the other side either values, can do this by adding +1x or +7 on both sides ,take note of the signs)
x=-7
to get y, substitute the values:
y+4x+1
y=-4x-1
y=-4(-7) - 1
y=(+28) -1
y=27
to check, subsitute the values of x and y:
using y=-5x-8
y=-5(-7) - 8
y=(+35) - 8
y=27

You cannot solve this problem. The first equation y+4x+1 never equals anything. You will get a different answer if the equation equals 58 then you would if it were to equal 76, or -32, or a variable like x or y or any other variable letter you can come up with, or any other number. It has to equal something before you can answer this problem.

substitute -5x-8 for Y
(-5x-8)+4x+1= 0
-x - 7 = 0
-x = 7
-x/-x = 7/-1
x = -7

y + 4x = 1
y = - 5x - 8
so substitute....
(- 5x - 8 ) + 4x = 1
- x - 8 = 1
- x = 9
x = - 9

y=-4x-1
-4x-1=-5x-8
adding 5x+8
x+7=0
adding -7
x=-7
substituting
y=27
if there is no typo in the sum
however if the sum is y=4x+1
4x+1=-5x-8
adding 5x+8
9x+9=0
dividing by 9
x+1=0
x=-1
sub
y=-3

Your first equation is invalid. Solve first for x by subsituting y for y and solve then do the same for y
