Let x = the number
Then x^2-3x=54
x^2-3x-54=0
(x-9)(x+6)=0
x-9=0
x=9
x+6=0
x=-6
x= 9 and x = -6 are the two possible answers

Whatever the number is..its square is more than 54....so, what number times 3 plus 54 will make a square number?

it cant be 64 (8squared) cos you cant divide 10 by 3
81 - 54 = 27
27 divided by 3 is 9
9 squared is 81

(not the most mathematically elegant way to do it but thats how i did it!)

the answer here will be solved by a
quadratic equation

let x = your number

x^2-3x=54
take 54 from each side
x^2-3x-54=0
{what two numbers when multipled
together gives -54 and added gives -3}
try -9, and +6
x^2-3x-54=(x-9)(x+6)=0
x-9=0,or x+6=0
>>>x= 9 or x= -6

therefore,x= 9 or x= -6

i hope that this helps

x² - 3x = 54

x² - 3x - 54 = 54 - 54

x² - 3x - 54 = 0

9 and 6 are factors of 54

Multiplying - 9 x 6 = - 54

Adding - 9 + 6 = - 3
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

x² - 3x - 54

(x - 9)(x + 6)

- - - - - - - - - -

The numbers are x = 9 and x = - 6

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Check for x = 9

x² - 3x = 54

(9)² - 3(9) = 54

81 - 27 = 54

54 = 54

- - - - - - - - - -

Check for x = - 6

x² - 3x = 54

(- 6)² - 3(- 6) = 54

36 + 18 = 54

54 = 54

x^2 - 3x = 54
(x - 9)(x + 6)

x = -6, 9, since we're looking for whole numbers
x = 9

x^2-3x=54
x^2-3x-54=0
(x-9)(x+6)=0
so the number is -6 0r 9

step one.... estimate... 10 squared is a hundred, minus 30 is 70. too high.

step two, estimate 9
81 - 27 = 54. sweet.

(figured they would use an integer. too easy)
