Why is Mr. Darling and Captain Hook traditionally played by the same actor?

I remember doing the play in high school (I was Tootles) and relearning about the book and Barrie in college, but for the life of me I couldn't remember this one little detail.

Two reasons.

From a purely practical point of view, they are never on stage at the same time and can therefore keep the number of actors (and therefore the production costs) down.

Secondly, both Hook and Mr. Darling represent the adult world which Peter Pan is rebelling against. This is reinforced by having the same actor play both parts.

I could be wrong on this one... but I believe that it's supposed to be symolism. Mr. Darling wants Wendy to grow up, thus making him an "enemy" per se. He wants Wendy to stop acting like a child. In Neverland, Capt. Hook is the pirate no one likes. Everyone fights against. The play is about the want/need to stay a child. Hence "Never growing up."

Because Captain Hook represents the father. I.e. Peter has negative feelings towards growing up and adults.

Because they displayed the same characteristics. Frequently the same actress that plays Mrs Darling is also the one who plays the grown-up Wendy.

Wow! I didn't know that! I guess they just couldn't find another actor for the part!
