It was Thanksgiving Eve and the snow had started in the early evening, but we were snug and cozy in front of the roaring fireplace, when all of a sudden there was a thud on the roof. Pa went out to check and came back in with a dead turkey. I said, "Oh, Pa, not Nellie." and started to cry, cause that was the turkey I had raised from an egg.
Pa said "honey, I didn't kill her, something else did, wait, what was that at the window?"
Once more Pa went out with his shotgun to investigate and we heard a shot, Pa came back in and said "Count your blessing, Halfpint, that was a cougar and he was heading out to get more of the turkeys and livestock. At least you were in the house, Halfpint, or he may have tried to have you for dinner, too."
