I must make VERY CLEAR I DO NOT have any usb ports on the fron or side of my monitor. The bay on the back, seems empty. There is not (as far as I can tell) can actual usb port in the bay. Therefore I was wondering what it was for?

I was looking at the D1226H on the Dell website and I do not see a USB bay, but perhaps you have a slightly different model.

Usually USB bays on a monitor are designed for you to be able to plug in external devices and allows you to "daisy-chain" these devices so that the wires from the mouse and/or keyboard do not have to also be run over to the actual PC, making for shorter distances to cover and easier access.

You can try this: Take a webcam or digital camera and plug it into the USB port on the monitor. The PC should play a sound and tell you "Found New Hardware" if it is an active plug&play port.

Those are left over from the early days of USB when all USB ports were on the back of the computer and almost impossbile to reach. So both Dell and Compaq made monitor with a USB hub in them. You could run a USB cable from the back of the PC to the back of the monitor. Then on the front of the monitor was a second USB port where you could attach your device. Was a lot easier to attach things there then having to crawl under a desk to the back of the PC.

The monitor or display of a computer is the primary user interface. Monitor problems are some of the most common computer problems since the voltages inside a monitor can be as high as 10 KV. Many of the problems can be fixed yourself by simply changing the settings. Detailed instructions available at http://fixit.in/monitor.html
