This means that your actual RAM is small, maybe 256 Mb or 512 MB and you are using applications that need more, like for example a video editing software. In this case the OS use a small part of your HDD as a temporary RAM solution to overcome the problem of less enough memory. When also this temporary RAM (also known as virtual memory) is not enough, the OS tells you that is increasing it's size to match the demands of your applications. Since virtual memory uses HDD space for temporary RAM, this is very very slow compared to a traditional RAM. My suggestion is to upgrade your RAM, at least double it. If you are unsure about what type of RAM you need, i will advice to go to www.crucial.com They have a cool tool called Memory Advisor Tool which can help you find out about the type of RAM you need. You can also scan your system with Crucial to find out, it's safe and doesn't contain spy-ware. At the end, they will (of course) suggest you to buy from them the right memory, but at the same time they will give you the info about what you need.
So, the solution in few word: Upgrade RAM.
