You'll see the Northern Lights when the sky is dark so effectively, they can be seen from late autumn to early spring. However, best time to see is late autumn and early spring. They are spectacular. They can be seen from Northern Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland, Alska, Northern Canada, the outer reaches of the Arctic Circle, and if you're lucky, the northern parts of the Scotland. I saw them in Iceland a few days after Christmas Day. This region I have described will always see the Northern Lights but you have to be standing in the right place at the right time looking in the right direction for you to see them. The lights sometimes can only be seen a couple of minutes but sometimes for hours. Head somewhere with no artificial lighting (although my best sighting was standing in the middle of Reykjavik).

The best time of year would be during the fall, most often in September, October, maybe November. I really dont know what country would have the best chance of seeing them but the US is a pretty good place. Yes, they are very spectacular to see. If you are wanting to see them, the best chance is somewhere in the country where it is VERY dark. The lights of the city usually make it harder to see them. Good luck and enjoy if you get the chance to see them.

Late fall and early spring are the best times to see them, but they can often be seen in winter as well. Any northern latitude country - Canada, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Greenland -would be the place to see them.

I have seen them probably hundreds of times, and yes, they are as spectacular as everyone says.
