My aunt just lost her husband in a devastaing arson fire/suicide that completely destroyed her 3 year old house. Her children have turned against her and blame her for the disaster, her husbands family is giving her a hard time and she just found out that her homeowners insurance, and life insurance policies may not pay out, due to the nature of the claims. Are there any support services out there for victims or tragedy like this? She lost everything, her husband, her home, her business, now her family is giving her s@#t. She has put the children in counsling to help them deal with their grief, I want to support her and help her in anyway that I can. I'm just not sure where to start. Can you imagine what she must be going through?

First let me give you and your family my sympathies and prayers. Your aunt put the children in counseling; has she put herself into counseling?

As far as supporting her, just being there for her and her knowing that you are there for her no matter what is a BIG start. Sometimes nonverbal support is the best especially when she feels like everyone is turning on her. Tell her to contact the Red Cross and United Way and they should be able to help her and/or direct her to people who can help her. Last but certainly not least.....KEEP PRAYING AND HAVE FAITH THAT ALTHOUGH GOD SHUT THIS DOOR HE HAS ANOTHER ONE TO OPEN.....I know this sounds cliche but it is true....

The first place to begin is to call 211, it is a clearing house that give information on social service agencies. Next, she can call Lutheran Family services to see if that could be a resource. Also, call United Way and the Red Cross. This is going to require a lot of phone calls and tenacity, however with family supporting her, such as you, she will come through this.

I agree with contacting churches for help. If you want to help your aunt so much, try asking her to move in with you untill she gets back on her feet.

As for the family problems, a lot of hurtful things are said through grief. Time does heal all wounds, and it will heal this one. Give your aunt love and support. Remind her that the family will be better towards her eventually, and it's not her fault. They will come to realize that after they get through the blaming stage of grief.

Good luck.

I think the Red Cross can give her emergency relief right away ($1,000 maybe more?).

This family certainly needs prayer support: I will pray for your aunt & the children.

Churches often help, maybe you can put an ad in the paper so she can get help. Also, see about contacting a free lawyer.

She can get help from the local social services.
You can help her just by being her loving friend.
