This is a very difficult question. I think most songwriters would say:
(1) Start with lyrics. They often get you to the rhythm of the song, and the words themselves will have a natural melody. Your words will figure out the time signature, tempo, key and form of the songs.
Writing lyrics is very very difficult, but can also be easy. Start with your own experience. What has shaped you? what do you want to say? Do you have some feelings to express to someone? Do you have a story to tell? Do you have someone else's story to tell? Write it down!

(2) Think about form. Most pop songs are something like this:
Verse (Verse) Chorus Verse Bridge Chorus Chorus (Coda)

Chorus is usually the catchy part people remember. It's repeated over and over. Verse is the "exposition" of the song, describing your feelings or telling a story. The Bridge is a contrasting part--it's usually in a different key. Lyrically, it might say something different from your song, be perhaps more emotional, or contrast the general theme of the rest of the song. A "Coda" is just a little tail end... sometimes it's the chorus repeating, sometimes it's something a little different. It's not always in a song.

(3) Think of a melody. There's a lot to this, and you can spend years and years in music school learning how notes lead from one to the other, what makes a good melody, etc., but most of the best are just intuitive: Sing notes to your words. If you can't do that, try singing melodies that you already know to words that you've written, then play with those melodies to make them your own.

(4) Add chord changes. This is a little too technical to be explained here. I'd suggest getting a good book on music theory basics or chord changes in pop music.

(5) Practice, Practice, Practice. Write lots of junk. DON'T throw it away. Write some more. Eventually, you'll find good stuff. Experiment with words; read a lot to get a good vocabulary. Experiment with sounds. LISTEN to the artists and styles that you like. Start by mimicking their songs; you'll get the hang of it.

Don't confuse performers for musicians. For example, Britney Spears is not a musician. She sings and dances to tunes composed by others. I don't know enough about the other people you listed to know if they compose their own music or play instruments, but I suspect most of them are performers.

First learn to play the piano if you want to compose. Or at least learn to play some instrument if you want to be a musician. If you just want to be able to sing, take voice lessons. You don't need any additional training to write the words.

If you really want to be a musician and learn to compose, you must be ready to spend some serious time learning and practicing. I took piano lessons over a year before I started my first composition, and I still don't know enough to get it to sound how I want it to sound.

Only you can make your dream come true.

My biggest tip is to just keep writing. With lots of practice, you'll hone your skills. Don't mold yourself to a specific method, either. I've written lyrics first sometimes and music first other times. You've just got to let it flow naturally, and always make it personal to you. And no, rhyming isn't always necessary.
